Rima Samman
L'amour se porte autour du cou
21 novembre 2024 > 18 janvier 2025
En résonance avec la 17e Biennale de Lyon - Art contemporain
Rima Samman presents a series of photographs taken from her family album. An ordinary family of modern times, scattered to the four corners of the world because of the various wars that have marked the history of Lebanon, her native country. The family's memory is tied up with the idea of a bond, a welcome and hospitality that stands the test of time.
L'amour se porte autour du cou mixes portrait photos and group photos. Hand-colouring is used to summon up loved ones who deceased long ago, and give them a new lease of life. Being in exile and having no children of her own, the artist felt the need ro leave her mark on her family album, before passing it on to future generations. For Rima Samman, this is a vital gesture that saves memory from sinking, a memory that is rarely recalled in the whirlwind of an uprooted life.
Rima Samman uses the smallest, simplest and most accessible means possible. An aesthetic specific to the system of resourcefulness and craftsmanship, where unexpected forms arouse astonishment and emotion.
This exhibition is a part of the Résonance network, alongside of the official itinerary of the 17th Biennale de Lyon - Art contemporain.
